DODGEBALL ~ 24th OCT 2009

Filed under: Event — admin @ 1:45 pm

We arrived early at 9am for the brief briefing, only to be locked out from the court at Heritage Sports Centre. Nevertheless, we managed to hold the briefing by the Malaysian Association of Dodgeball (MAD) people, from KDU college, at the car park space.

DSC_2654

Rules were simple, get hit – you’re out, someone catches your ball – you’re out, one opponent in.  There were 4 marshals on the court to keep an eye on the players.

Mechanics for the AWLYMPICS Dodgeball goes as such. A match between two teams, consists of a best-of-3 games play. The team who wins two consecutive games gets 5 points, whereas the team who wins two non-consecutive games (rubber) gets 3 points, the team with one win in a match, gets 1 point, no points are awarded for the team that did not win a game for a particular match. Sounds complicated? Sure it is. Only an analyzer would come out with such a scoring. (whistles innocently~~)

yj

For the Preliminary Round, there are 2 Groups, Team A and Team B who must battle amongst the other houses. Next, we have Semi-Finals, where the top 2 of each A and B will battle it out to go to the Finals. Losers of the Semis will fight for the 3rd and 4th placing.

We started off with Team A of each house, competing against each other in the Prelim rounds. Out of all of the teams, Yellowie A got the highest points in Prelims, followed by Orangie A.

Next, it was time for Team B to show off their dodging talents.  After the intense dodging and hitting, Orangie B stood out as the highest scorer for Team B, followed by Pinkie B.

Then came the Semi-Finals, it was Orangie A VS Orangie B. It was sure that Orangie will have a team in the Finals, but nevertheless, the match was pretty awesome, with both teams playing all out. It was anyone’s game; nobody could predict who would turn out to be the winner until the very last minute. Even when there was a 5 on 1 situation, the tables may turn in favor of the last man/woman standing. The winner of the battle of Oranges was…..Orangie A.

Semi-Final 2 saw Yellowie A VS Pinkie B. I personally thought that it was going to be a David vs Goliath kinda thing, considering that Yellowie A was the highest scorer and Pinkie B were the underdogs of the match.  Pinkie B played a well deserved match and won it to gain the entry to the Finals.

3rd /4th placing match was between Yellowie A and Orangie B. This match saw Yellowie A losing steam as team Orangie B put the extra effort to clinch the 3rd spot of the event.

Last but not least, we had the Finals between Pinkie B and Orangie A. They played probably the longest match in the whole event. At one point, the winners had a “false-celebration”, forgetting the last team member of the opposing team was still alive. It was indeed an interesting match.

Fourth place goes to Team Yellowie

Third place goes to Orangie B

Second place goes to Pinkie B~!

Winners of Dodgeball AWlympics ’09 are……. ORANGIE A!

Though there were some hiccups, and bruises, I’m sure everyone involved had as much fun as I did organizing the event. Thanks to all that were involved, because you guys made it happen. A BIG HUG & THANK YOU~

MAHJONG

mahjong

Krak, krak, krak, krak.

roomsetup

That’s the sound you can heard coming out from all 8 tables which playing mahjong in our infamous training room. The room that everyone familiar with trainers, chairs and music from the training has been transformed into the stage of our ultimate mahjong tournament.

The ultimate mahjong tournament started right after we send off the marathon runners. All mahjong players from all four houses can’t wait to start their games. Of course we won’t start our ultimate mahjong tournament without our Mahjong Judge who is none other than our infamous John Voo.

 playing-mahjong

The first round started off with 24 players from all four houses and everyone is given 28 minutes to win as many chips as they can so that they could qualify into next round. Only 9 players will qualify onto next level. Every now and then you will hear players said “Pong”, “Kong” and “Sek Wu”. Players been reminded during last 10 minutes, 5 minutes and 1 minute before the round ends.

At the end of the round one, the committee gets the chips collected by each players and top 9 players qualified for next round. Round 2 started after 10 minutes break from the first round. Round 2 qualified players list are as attached.

  DSC_4981

On round 2, committee brings in the surprise for the players. Not only they will be playing 38 minutes, they will be “entertained” by cheerleading contest. While the players are playing, the cheerleading is being executed concurrently in the training room. With the music and cheers from the cheerleading, committee hopes to give “more” moral supports to the players. If you can see the players, they are so concentrated that they don’t even notice the cheerleaders are in the room.

cheerleading

After 38 minutes ends for round 2, we finally get our top 3 players. Greenies have their mahjong king and queen while orangies sending their most experience player into the final round. The final round is the battle for the title of mahjong king and queen. We arrange the stage in the middle of the training room and put up the final table onto the stage. On the final round, the final 3 players are also given 38 minutes to battle it out.

 mahjong-final

This final round you can see, everyone is standing around the main stage to view the final round of mahjong. Each player brings their skills and all sorts of charms to make sure they win the final round. After a long and hard battle of the champions, we finally found our mahjong queen. She is Jynnie Tan from the Greenies follow by Micheal Chai at 1st runner up and Nicolette from the orangies became 2nd runner up.

Dear Matt and the entire committee members,

I would kike to congratulate you all of you for organizing succcessfully such an awsome event, fisrt ever in Asiaworks the AWlympics. I can imagine the fun you guys had organizing it, which came along with all the heartache, pain, sweat, and tears.

I must say i trully enjoyed every bit of the event that took place. I have benefited very much from it due to the perfect timing of all the events which was held after Hari Raya. Normally, every year, for the whole month of Hari Raya, we will be going to one open house after another; eating, eating, eating and gaining weight, and end being grungiee!!! But this year, because of the Awlympics, the focus was shifted.

Tournaments every weekend, busy keeping myself healthy and fit. Not to mention, the trainings on weekdays too!!

But what’s more important is to see so many people (GLP, non LP, family members, import atheletes, children) coming together, joining hands, participanting in events, Cheering one another, dancing, laughing, screaming, having lots of fun and making thing happen. My relationship with my brother is taken to another level. My relationship with my whole family has turned a new leaf because of the Awlympics.

I simply don’t know how to express my gratitude towards Matt and the entire committee members and making this happen. Thank you, thank you, thank you from the bottom of my heart!!! Ching Ching, you gave a wonderful speech yesterday during the closing which really melted my heart. I feel tears starting to fill up the corners of my eyes as in writing this. You guys are amazing!

“YOU MADE THIS HAPPEN AND I LOVE YOU!!!”

BOWLING, FOOSBALL & POOL ~ 4th Oct 09

Filed under: Event — admin @ 4:05 pm

After a month of preparation, finally it’s the day for BOWLING, POOL and FOOSBALL!

ebowling

It was a beautiful Sunday morning and we reached e Curve bowling centre on 8.45 am. There were some personnel cleaning the bowling lane with some heavy metal machine rolling the lane and we started to prepare table and plan the event flow of the day. Matt arrived at the centre with the T shirts and the event started when Matt hold the microphone and announce the cheerleading competition to be started in 5 minutes time.

cheerleading
The orange team cheerleading team had orange stripes on their forehead while the pink team have cute little hats on their heads. As the green team performing their cheerleading, it lifted up the energy and excitement of the participants. As the green team ended their cheers with two members being held in the air, it really blew my mind away. The orange and pink team cheered and danced so youthfully that attracted even the personnel of the bowling centre to watch as they cheered. Yellow team cheered without music and it was impressive that it really motivated me by the way of their uniformed gesture and strong and clear words performed by the team.

competation
The men and women individual games kicked off after the exciting cheerleading session. Throughout the game, all the participants enjoyed themselves and I can hear clapping, cheering, shouting and jumping at 8 of the bowling lanes that we occupied for the day. Other than the sound of dropping bowling pin, bowling balls rolling and cheering of participants, I can feel their happiness and enthusiasm. I can see long time friends catching up in the competition, current LPs meeting former LPs and strengthening of friendship by working in a team for a common objective.

photographers
The camera man were taking pictures professionally throughout the duration of the games and enjoying themselves at the same time seeing the participants bowl. Participating in bowling session (team tournament) really allowed me to realize what teamwork is. I can see my team members’ happiness when they strike a game; disappointment when they left one pin unsettled; and the encouragement and support that was given between team members. As the team bowling session comes to the end, the foosball and pool tournament started at 1.00 pm two levels below the bowling centre.

committees
The committee were busy organizing the teams and team members were discussing among themselves on the strategy and ways to win the competition. The yellow team member was aggressively making arrangement for the game since there did not have sufficient manpower. Noises were in the air as the games carried on and LPs catching up chatting and encouraging each other.

pool and foosball
Foosball games were particularly exciting, I can hear people screaming and cheering at each foosball table that we occupied! It was good fun there! Scoring a goal was not that easy after all, needed some skills + luck!

Whereas at the pool tables, it was a bit quiet.. Participants were concentrating on which ball to hit and where to hit it from. Even the supporters were very into the game.. watching closely.. of course by the end of each game, I can hear people cheering for good games played!

But nevertheless, the whole afternoon was FUN! Never seen so many LPs gathered to play foosball and pool, screamed and cheered so loudly for the joy of winning or just scoring a goal!

At the end of the day, everyone went home with good memories, doing something they might not have done for a very long time, and the most important thing is they enjoyed themselves and we are really happy! Laughter that filled e-curve that day, we were surely the noisy bunch and thank you to all that came to play, support or just drop by to watch the events!

winner
The winners for each events can be seen from the hall of fame and the scores at the score board.

DARTS

Filed under: Event — yjtoh @ 12:22 pm

darts

We started off with each rumah drawing lots to play on which board. Each player has to score points by landing their darts on specific sections of the dart board. Playing for 5 rounds, their aim is to amass points closest to 301 points. We had 5 categories, Professional Male, Professional Female, Distance, In Between, Happy and Instinct.

Initially, the players were a bit passive, getting familiarize with their darts and thus, it was more of getting the darts on the board. As the game progresses that is when we get to see the difference between the pros and the really pros. The game got exciting when Suresh consistently scored high points in the 2nd and 3rg game. Finally, at the end of the game, Suresh, from the Orange rumah, got the closest to set score, with a margin of 15 to win the Gold medal. In 2nd place we have Laurence (Orange), 3rd Buq (Orange) and 4th Thareeq from the Yellow rumah.

blindfolder

Next, we had Instinct, where the players wore blindfolds to play the normal game. It proved to be a challenge to some, but others quickly found a way to guide their players (though some of their guides were of no use whatsoever, like singing Beyonce’s “to the left, to the left” but tembak to the right, haha). It was really thrilling and adrenaline pumping to watch the player throw the darts, because you never know where it’s going to land on, scary I tell you…. Results of the games can be found at http://www.qslounge.com/awlympic2009/2009/10/hall-of-fame/

Then, we had Distance, where participants had to throw their darts twice the normal distance. The same rules apply but player also have an option to double their points if they opt to go the extra mile, by going back behind the 3rd line.

So, what do you do when you’re Happy? You jump around, of course~! Well, the Happy category is played by players jumping on the same spot, while throwing the dart. We saw some hyper-active bunnies and some kungfu jumps ala Bruce Lee in this category. It was indeed a Happy game.

inbetween

Lastly, to end it on a high note, we looked in between our legs to play this game called In Between. Bend over your legs and shoot. That was the theme for the In Between category, where the players throw the darts between their legs to a reversed dart board. Blood rush to their heads as they sweated their way to the last game of the event.

winners

The Orange team basically dominated the top spots of the darts game but it was interesting to see the new players getting interested in the game, which was the main purpose of us organizing this event. We hope you guys had FUN and thanks once again for your support.

THANK YOU THANK YOU THANK YOU~

Committee:  Thanks to Nina, Buq, Laurence, Suresh and the rest whom have helping us keep track with the rules and the counting.

supporters

Besides that, it wouldnt be surprised to meet bumble bee or superman walking around the center, sexy dolls passing by, ballerinas dancing in the lobby, or butterflies are chatting with friends… because they are the participants for the Marathon.
Committees are doing the final setup for the events. Today’s events are Marathon, Dart, Mahjong, Board Games and Library.

ACKNOWLEGEMENT

Filed under: Acknowledgement — admin @ 10:16 am

Here’s to everyone out there and to the team. Thank you. Your support meant a lot to us.

The committee is very pleased with what was created today. Seeing LPs coming together, having fun, challenging, getting connected, just as what we intended to achieve! Thanks for being a good sport, willing to stretch, and for all the support rendered! Really appreciate that! We look forward to your 100% in the next events! We’ll dream of Bumble Bee and the girl guides tonight, and sing Negara Ku!

Matt,
Thanks you and to all the committee members for organising this event. Today has been such a fantastic day and getting to know the older glp’s who came back for this event. Kudos!

Our team had a yum cha session and talked about what a great day it was. Everywhere i look i can see how much effort and heart they have put in. I dont think it was an easy task to pull off but the team created a unique event. Thank them for taking their time off to make it happen for us.
